Background / General description:
Note: Please include three references in the application package. The Human Development and Public Services Team of the Development Research Group is the focal point of the World Bank’s research on human development and public sector issues. The team’s work spans education, health, labor markets, and safety nets, as well broader public sector and governance issues including the political economy of public services and aid effectiveness. Staff are expected to maintain an outstanding scholarly publication record, and to provide relevant policy advice and technical expertise to colleagues throughout the World Bank. Note: If the selected candidate is a current Bank Group staff member with a Regular or Open-Ended appointment, s/he will retain his/her Regular or Open-Ended appointment. All others will be offered a 5 year term appointment.
Duties and Accountabilities:
DECHD is seeking at least one Economist to join the team with expertise, or the necessary analytical skills to conduct research in the areas listed above, especially in health and education. The specific responsibilities include: • Publish articles in prominent peer-reviewed academic journals on topics related to human development. • Interact with (a) counterparts in World Bank operational units, (b) government officials, (c) counterparts in other international and development organizations in matters concerning research and policy analysis. • Provide policy and technical advice to World Bank operations and clients in related areas, mainly by writing analytically sophisticated and policy relevant briefs, reports and other knowledge products. • Provide direct support to other units in the World Bank in the form of “cross-support”. • Respond to management’s requests for analytical work or expert opinions on current or recent research. • Oversee the work of consultants and research assistants as needed. • Periodically present original research in seminars, academic conferences and public discussion to seek feedback and disseminate new research results.
Selection Criteria:
Three reference letters (Please include the contact information of references in your CV, and attach letters when applying on line). • Advanced university degree (PhD preferred) in Economics or related field and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (including professional experience acquired prior, during and after the PhD program). • Demonstrated technical skills, including econometric methods or analytical modeling that can be used to evaluate effects of economic policies and public interventions. • Demonstrated potential for publication of original research in leading peer reviewed journals. • Demonstrated willingness to tackle new areas of research. • Ability to learn quickly, and the capacity to work simultaneously and effectively on a variety of tasks, independently adjusting priorities and achieving agreed results. • Ability to communicate technical knowledge and expertise and to work across organizational boundaries with ease. • Strong oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely. • Excellent spoken and written proficiency in English. •Three references.
